i decided to give it an oil change, i drained the oil, changed the filter, no problems ...then when i done up the drain plug it just kept screwing in until it fell into the sump!
so now i got to drop the sump to get the bloody thing out, how hard a job is this?

Can be tricky. You need to rasie the engine a bit above the subframe to get the sump off around the oil pump - or drop the subframe out of the way. An engine support beam like this one ( http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-Engine-Support-Beam-500kg-Capacity-Double-Support-ES502-/130636078383?pt=UK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item1e6a845d2f (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-Engine-Support-Beam-500kg-Capacity-Double-Support-ES502-/130636078383?pt=UK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item1e6a845d2f) ) helps but you can probably impovise.

got the sump off, used a bit of wood across the strut tops and some straps to holt the engine/gearbox. pain in the arse but thats classic cars

As you have the sump off take the opportunity to change the bearings one at a time using a good quality torque wrench to do the nuts and bolts back up. As a minimum inspect them one at a time as it is better to know if they are damaged or well worn.
Eric
PS the sump plug should be a tapered item that cannot fall into the sump so something is very wrong there either plug or badly damaged threads

i think the big ends and mains are ok. once i got it running correct all the rumbles disapeared. i think i need a new sump plug, where can i get one?
