Title: Fast indicators but not hazards

Evening all,

I have fitted rear LED indicator bulbs and now have a strange symptom.

If I indicate left or right, they all flash twice as fast. Typically that means a bulb has gone but all working. I'm guessing it's because the load is less due to the led bulb.

However hazard lights work perfectly.

I'd like to stick with moving over to LEDs but need to understand why hazards work and indicators don't, ie is changing the relay a possible solution?

Is there an indicator relay and a hazard relay attached to each? This means that two relays are fitted.
The one for the hazard may be an LED-compatible relay.
Replacing the relay for the indicators with an IC relay would solve the problem.
I have replaced all indicator bulbs with LEDs and the relays with IC relays.

Hi John

You must have an LED specific Flasher Relay. Try Classic Car LED for decent items. They have produced a full kit for the Monte and the bulbs are obviously better quality than the ebay offerings. I am loving the dash bulb replacements that fit perfectly in the shallow factory blue domes. For the first time ever I have to consider a matching dimmer to replace the OE Rheostat that will not work with LEDs.

Thanks both for the replies. I might swap out the original relays as a precautionary measure.

Hi John

Above is 100% correct, after changing all my indicators for leds, the original hazard relay works fine and had to replace the side indicator for modern led compatible one, simple fix.

I'm being a bit lazy.
Is the flasher unit in fuse box or in car?

Hi John,

From the factory it was attached to the steering column in a steel clip.
Most are now hanging.
Mine was a 3 pin round unit, but they vary.

Looks like I have a 5 pin connector, so my 3 pin electronic replacement for LED isn't a straight swap

Hi John

Do you have a separate Hazard flasher relay under the dash, or is this a combined hazard and turn indicator relay I wonder, hence the 5 pin?

Maybe something they introduced on the later cars?
