Title: HPE Tailgate Struts
Post by: Nigel on March 17, 2025, 08:48:25 PM

SGS Engineering in Derby stock 2 versions for the HPE, standard and VX, the latter to cope with
the weight of the spoiler.
They are rated at 670N and 830N respectively, otherwise identical in size.

I originally bought VX versions in 2020 thinking they'd be 'better'. However they are quite strong.
So this time around, due to juddering, I bought standard replacements.
After fitting them I found they barely held, and given the slightest nudge, down it went.

So I returned them, and ordered the VX type again.
I think that an ideal pressure would probably be around 700/750N for the standard hatch but custom
struts are probably more expensive.

Hi Nigel, i bought the standard ones from SGS last year and they have worked on my std tailgate. It def feels like they are more effective in warm weather, they only just hold it up in the winter!. Suggests you are correct that something rated at 700+n would be better. I thought the std ones were very well priced and fitted perfectly.

The ones that Mark sells are good enough for my VXHPE - The old ones worked on the level and when warm
