Afternoon all, I've just had the non-obligatory MOT done and it's come back with some surprises
Front Sub-frame corroded and seriously weakened On N/S near lower arm mounting (5.3.3 (b) (i))
Nearside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area excessively corroded significantly reducing structural strength Inner sil (5.3.6 (a) (i))
Not sure where to go from here. I'd guess I need to find a local welder so any recommendations?

Cannot remember where you are located?
Sounds like a bit of a pain for the rear one. The front subframe one should be okish to do I guess, though will need to remove the front wishbone etc.

Reading so should have some options but not had to get fabrication or welding done before.
I did a visual check when I got home and not sure I agree. Other reason is in the last 3 years of MOT nothing was even advisory, and 600 dry miles later it's a failure...

Hi John,
Testers often mark failure points with a yellow crayon, well mine does.
I would thoroughly check these two points, and if you're sure they are ok, take it elsewhere.
Was it the same place that did previous tests?

I'd ask the examiner to point out the corrosion and weaknesses to you. Is it possible he's fishing for business and sees an old Lancia as easy pickings?
Alternatively, he may be right and it's time to nip it in the bud before it becomes serious enough to threaten the car's existence! If he is right then it'll be cheaper now than in 12 months (or less) and if you don't take action then the insurance company may have an out in the worst case scenario. I'm sure the insurance companies check MOT databases in the event of any claim....

Last MOT was Lancia specialist so currently thinking of taking it there for their assessment and will assume the worse. Also need to get gear linkage adjusted so in my mind it makes sense, but has put a dent in my enjoyment

The subframe rot seems surprising the rot at the rear less so. It's all possible to repair I guess.

Sadly the problems are not a surprise, highs and lows. Unless you go for complete restoration there is likely to be a whole range of the unexpected on 40+ year cars. This is especially so on cars like this which were of little value for many years and hence maint was typically on a budget.
It is one of those things where you need to get your mind set to accept that there WILL be problems and to live with them the best you can.
