Title: Mystery screw

Hi

I picked up a box of assorted bolts, nuts etc from John who restored the HPE. It included the missing subframe bolts, which was the main reason to collect it. However amongst the items were 4 of these. A couple had black paint on them, somsuspect they came from the front end off-the-peg donor Coupe, but Ii cannot work out if they actually came from it and if so where. Anyone have any ideas?

Having dismantled every nut and bolt of the Coupe I can say I don't recognise it Peter!

That was my thought, but the Coupe was an IE and I wondered if it related to something to do with the extra bits on and IE?

Hi Peter they are to create and Earthing point. The idea being the self tapper cuts to metal and a terminal added to the 6mm stub with a nut gives a ground connection. Of course they can be used for mounting other items. I have some in my nuts and bolts collections from various stripped rusty VX Coupes. I do not remember where they were used.

Thanks, that now makes sense as I could not see why the threaded part was so small. So debate is if to use them.

They are definitely used on VX front spoilers. The screw end fixes the wing to the front valance and the m6 is to bolt the plastic VX front spoiler on. Think there’s a third one in the middle of the front valance where the two halves of the VX spoiler meet.

Wonder if they were used on the IE front as well?

I did not take the front to bits, so have no knowledge, just a tub of assorted screws, bolts and nuts.

Hi Peter,
Maybe your i.e. had a VX spoiler fitted at some point in its life. I remember a few decades ago that the VX front spoilers were quite desirable. The fixings sit behind the front bumper so they wouldn’t be obviously visible.
I’ve owned a few i.e. cars and the front valance fittings were the usual 10mm head flange screws.
I can’t recall these on any model bar the VX but i could be wrong.

I doubt that the IE had anything additional on it. I bought it from the owner who from memory had it from the 80s and it was stored for 30 years or so and was very original.

Another of life's mysteries....

They are in a tub of parts going for plating tomorrow, but will most likely end up in a box of spare bolts etc.
