Title: Phone holder for early cars
Post by: peteracs on January 20, 2026, 04:52:43 PM
Hi

I was always frustrated that there was no sensible location for a phone to mount on the early cars. I tried a few off the shelf items, none were very successful. I did not want anything attached to the screen which would have been a simple solution. My main reason for having one was to use it as a Sat Nav so a viewable level was required. So I took two off the peg designs from the internet, both open source, one was an adjustable phone holder and the other a lockable ball and socket design. Using Tinkercad and some extra 'parts' I have ended up with a design that uses the redundant cigarette lighter socket as a mounting point.

First test today went quite well, but have the odd tweak still to do before I commit it to the final material, the yellow is simple PLA which I use for prototyping.

Still marvelling how easy it is to do this stuff with the free software and low cost kit available.

Chris has a phone holder screwed to a spare ashtray. I'd have thought about following a similar route and fitting a mount to the exisiting ashtray assuming the pull knob can be unscrewed? It'd be a little higher up then too?

Hi Guy

Interesting idea, this way allows me to put back to normal in a few seconds, having a second ashtray floating around as well does not grab me tbh.

I have used the mount screwed to the spare ash tray approach with a Brodit mount.
