Door handle removal
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:55:52 PM »
Hi Guys...need your help again!  I'm stripping the doors in order to get ready for paint.  Problem I've got...I can't get the door handle through the door handle aperture, if I tilt it...I get it half out.  The arm that's on the back of the handle stops it coming out...any ideas?

You have to get a small philips screwdriver and remove the barrel from the door handle assembly out from the inside of the door.

Open the door and sit on the sill so that your at the right level. There are two small screws that hold the lock barrel assembly in place, undo them and slide the back of the barrel off. They might be masked by the rubber water cover over the back of the barrel.

Then pop the barrel out and then you'll find the handle assembly will come out.

Thanks...but I've already taken off the plate that's on the back of the barrel which was held by a little spring circlip.  The problem seems to be the shaft that rotates when the handle is pulled is just too bulky to enable enough of a tilt to release the handle from the aperture.  I'll try your suggestion tomorrow.

Once you have removed the lock barrel I cannot recall if you have have the handle in the open position.

What I can say for sure is that with the lock barrel in place the handle won't come out.  Whatever way you jiggle it around.

If you force it you risk distorting the door skin.

Excellent!...Thanks Matt, taking the barrel out gave just enough wiggle room for the assembly to come out.

Cheers,

John.
