Just excellent...thanks for the good info.
So, my vacuum setup is now that the vac connection is between the take-off on the inlet manifold and the thermoswitch in the airbox, which in turn is connected to the diaphragm for the hot/cold vane actuator on the airbox...as per Rossocorsa's post above.

The vacuum port at the base of the carb is now connected to the smaller bore crankcase vent junction underneath the airbox...as per the Emissions control diagram in the Haynes manual.
My vacuum system was really messed up by a previous owner down the line who just blanked everything off and made some dubious connections. However, the engine ran fine before these corrections and hopefully will run even better now. Just waiting for some parts to arrive before I can test.
In the interim, I am going to have a play with my smoke machine to establish the integrity of the vacuum system.
Cheers,
Steve
UPDATE FOLLOWING SMOKE MACHINE TEST :I tried to feed smoke into the system using a piece of vacuum pipe which was originally used (incorrectly) to plumb the base of the Carb into the inlet manifold, a seemingly pointless connection. This pipe was blocked as a PO had pushed a ball bearing into the pipe, probably to use as a capping device for the aforementioned vacuum connections......
