Inside the wiper motor mech - help?
« on: September 25, 2025, 10:22:55 AM »
Hi,

I have been trying to work through all the possible issues on the wipers, and feel its mostly attributed to the wiring now as Nigel pointed out.  But...  my wipers wont park,

My plan is to see if I can get it 'working enough' to use for the next week or so and then do this properly this winter.

So I opened up the box of gubbins on the motor and have spotted a melted contact that has bent in such a way the little contacts inside was not able to go from one side to the other.  I have bent it back and now of course its a bit loose, so packed it out with a little piece of plastic back where I think it should have been.

I then spotted this.  On the wiper plastic gear is a cam, I think this cam has melted?  Or maybe they all look like this??  Hoping someone has one on the shelf could open it up (five screws) and take a look for me please?

Mark

Yep,

Mine was exactly the same but I managed to repair it reasonably well but just didnt like the thought of that burnt contact. I bit the bullet and got a good second hand one for the price of a kidney.

In the process of troubleshooting my own voltage drop for the wipers, I removed the terminal blocks from the bottom of the fusebox to thoroughly clean all the connections. Worth doing as I found that the rad fan connection had been obviously overheating due to a high resistance connection which was burning the terminal block. The same could be true of the other terminals to a lesser extend so I would definitely recommend a proper clean of these terminal block connections regardless.

when you say repair what exactly did you do?  I think slow wipers need their own heading here :-)

I will do exactly as you say and clean the contacts on the fusebox.  Someone has been doing lots of 'work' over the years electrically and I have a few extra and/or relocated relays.  Amazing everything does work, just scares me when I see how its been done

I made a new cam lobe by drilling out the original and inserting an appropriately sized solid plastic tube. Worked fine albeit crude.

The root cause of the burnt contact was my real concern which is why I caved in and got a good replacement. It doesn't rain in Western Australia so dont really need wipers so I may have got away with it but hey !

Also, just just to illustrate the potential for voltage drop and high resistance connections, I have attached a pic of one of the fuse blocks that plugs onto the bottom of the fuse box. The burnt terminal is for the Rad fan which was still capable of supplying 12v to the fan as read by a multimeter but when any electrical load went theough this connection it failed.

Bit of a struggle to get these blocks out but I removed and cleaned every spade connector and applied carbon grease. Easy to remove the blocks now and hopefully improved any voltage drop issues.

So no park still.  Wipers work but are slow and no doubt this is the wiring state.

So the park issues are down to the melting inside the gearbox of the motor.  Look for a used one or new c£200 I have found.  Washer works though :-)
