Right next item to sort out.  Door checks

I have asked Mark when his replacements are back in stock, is this all I need to repair?

Omicron are showing this plastic part in their catalogue as a 3d printed part, printed to order for 21.55 GBP.

Bit pricey but ......

Hi Mark

I bought two original ones from Mark which broke on first use far too brittle material, Mark then supplied me with a pair of much better material, but probably too soft this time, but they are working, though not as well as originals when in good condition. No experience on what material Omicron are using, but I think that the price is not too silly if they work well.

Hi Mark

If the plastics are unbroken, then that is the best solution for now.

so the door check saga continues...

Mark's good used ones I cleaned up and painted and took the best to the thick wires from my two sets (the passenger ones from both sides), popped them back in and no difference (they wont stay open).  I then bought a pair of new replacements from Mark, used the old door mounts, swapped the wires over and guess what, no difference again.  So the wire part, should you be able to pull to the very end, ie the loop?  I am too scared to pull any further than the one but last part of the wire

Hi Mark

No, the final loop does not go over the insert. The door will open about 60 degrees normally?

You may find the metal rods are deformed, so that the centre section is too wide. I assume the fastenings I. The A pillar are solid?

I will check more closely, I am thinking I need to squeeze the 'wire' together a bit

Thanks Peter

Agree with Peter, There should be 2 definite hold points for the door but the end loop only acts as a spring/buffer/damper whe the door is fully open. Dont force this as you have "used" plastics in there which are 40 years old and therefore possibly brittle (as you seem to have found out earlier)

The "wires" look fine in your pictures, as do the plastic bits that runs inbetween the wires.

The wires get squeezed together considerably when the ends are inserted in the A-pillar mounts so I doubt you need to try to bend them closer. Think they are spring metal anyway .

These wires are also supposed to be slightly curved when fitted with the curve being inwards towards the car. If they were fitted curving awar from the car it would be incorrect but not sure what effect this would have on holding the door open

Maybe post a pic of how the wire is mounted on the A-pillar ?

Cheers,

Steve

In my experience, these door checks never work very well.
They serve to stop the door opening too far, but keeping the door open,
not so much!

The problem with the door opening too far is not ideal! It can result in creases to the outer skin and the front edge catching on the inner flange of the wing which can then get bent outwards. Lots of paint damage and repairs needed. I've replaced both the plastic blocks on mine, one has broken already and I don't expect the other to last much longer... Care will be needed.
