Info Needed

Good Morning All,

While having a look at all the important fluid levels, checking the belts and trying to find out why the alternator is not charging, I saw this and here's the question. What is the function of it?

This is the resistor that controls the speed of the heater fan. It is some what larger than modern electronics!
