Whining- not me, the car.
« on: May 20, 2014, 12:40:45 PM »
I can appreciate that this is near impossible from a distance, but here goes.

When the long-dormant car went back on the road, I got a nasty whine , felt through the wheel, when turning left. It went away after a few days and I put it down to lack of use.

Guess what? Its back.

My first thought was a stuck caliper, but both hubs are cool even after a longish drive and you can push the car with one hand, hot or cold, so don't think it is that.

Any thoughts?

Wheel bearing, if the noise goes away when cornering (loading coming off the offending bearing)

Often happens when cars left stood for long periods, that why I jack my cars up and put them on stands if they are gonna be there a while.

CV joints? Are all the boots intact? Or is there some dried up grease inside the boots?

Thanks Neil

Boots are good- the car came with a replacement one for a boot that went presumably when the car was last on the road the early 1980s- so I know that one at least has fresh grease in.

Easy to talk oneself out of checking the other one, but needs to be done to eliminate suspects.

Another experienced car friend has suggested steering rack lubrication as a potential source of the whine hum, which he accurately described as almost harmonic
- like rubbing a finger on a wine glass rim.

In an idle 5 mins between various DIY distress I read the Haynes, which seemed rather inconsistent. As I read it the rack with damper is ZF? It then describes the lubrication as grease. However, in the stripping section it describes draining the oil, but not re-filing it.

How much if a pain is getting the rack out of the car?

I think all manual RHD coupé racks were TRW but as with all things Lancia difficult to be certain!

More to do with the exhaust down pipe, enough room with that removed, no idea if that is still in situ.

So the "only ZF racks have  a steering damper' bit in the Haynes( repeated in more than one place) is duff info then?

I was just wondering if there was a way to introduce more grease ( if indeed grease is the correct lube) with the rack insitu.

Well mine is TRW and has the damper and it has thin oil in it. I think there is a ref somewhere for the type of oil, cannot remember where I have seen it...., but will be needing it when I can order the replacement gaiter from Mark.

Not much in the way of further clues in the Concise Workshop Manual. It states 200cc's of SAE 90 oil to fill the rack housing, It also mentions grease, which I take to be within the actual gaiters?

No mention of rack manufacturer, but both of my Coupes have had the damper, which is clearly visible on top of the rack, offset slightly to the left.

I've only ever seen TRW racks for non power assisted and ZF for the power assisted on Betas.

It's confusing even in the parts books as I think lancia got confused, I think purely from my less than good memory that RHD coupes only had trw but berlinas and possibly hpe could be either
