Distributor for 2000i.e.
« on: December 08, 2013, 06:47:56 AM »
Looking for distributor for my HPE 2000i.e. (L-Jetronic). Will distributor from carburator version (1979) fit? Looks pretty similar.

You can use the cap and rotor and the mounting is the same BUT the IE distributor has no advance weights or pulse/signal generating pieces inside and it is about half the length. All it does is to distribute the spark to each cylinder in turn as the advance is handled by the ECU and the engine speed signal comes from the sensor on the crank pulley.

That is a complicated way of saying no you cannot use this distributor but owners of VX cars would want this distributor and if you have the amplifier and coil the Montecarlo owners looking to tune their cars with a fast inlet cam might want it.

Sorry I have no pictures of an IE distributor.

There are two different ignition systems on ie depending when it was built, not sure how this relates to the distributor but i will check when i have time

My early i.e. (81/82) from a pre digiplex era has no vaccum advance (Marelli SM808GXK). The distributor has the same housing however, just the opening is plugged with plastic cap.

I've never had to deal with the digiplex system, other than when I ripped out the make shift wiring in the engine bay and replaced the loom. I cant remember but before you chuck the vacuum advance, i'm pretty sure that a vacuum pipe went from the distributor to the digiplex ecu, need someone to confirm that though.
If your not running the digiplex system this is the distributor you want...

If you are then the vacuum advance stays I believe, and i'm not sure if you should have a pick up, but it is still available from a few places online (Big white wiring protection) that connects to the amplifier also pictures.
In answer to your question, if your running the same as mine, you can use yours by removing the spacer/adapter cam end of distributor and fitting a pick up if it hasn't already got one.
Have seen it cheaper somewhere else but this is what you'd need.

This is the system that my car runs.

This is the digiplex setup, with as I seemed to remember has a vacuum connection on the digiplex unit. If your running the digiplex setup, it's mounted on the bracket for the power steering reservoir on the opposite side to the battery and looks like an ecu.

I was referring the the Digiplex generation of IE cars and I have part of one of those distributors it is half the height of the earlier one and there is NO vacuum connection point from the distributor or hall pick up as described in my previous reply. However it would be very easy to connect the Digiplex to the inlet manifold vacuum as they did on Strada/Ritmo Abarth cars for the ECU.

Do you have the Digiplex ECU?

Will go on a weekend to the garage and see. Not sure - don't remember any stuff near bracket for the power steering reservoir. If i understand right - injected cars don't not have vacuum connection on distributor, both M.Marelli and Digiplex?

Tone, digiplex is also Marelli's system. It is newer, mainteanance free digital not analog ignition system. It is reliability is quite questionable however.
As I said before mine has not vacuum connection. However there were also bosch distributors mounted in betas, but I am not sure whether in injected versions.

apologies for slow research on this!

all distibutors on injection or vx are marelli part numbers as follows

ie 82372053 no vac adv
vx 5966496 vac adv 9938278
ie with digiplex 82382056 no vac adv

as Eric said the digiplex dizzy is much shorter and only contains a rotor arm no advance mechanism at all as that is all dealt with by the ignition ecu

the digiplex does appear to have a performance and economy advantage and is paired with an updated L-jetronic ecu.

So the 'vacuum connection' shown on the Digiplex unit on the diagram above connects to somewhere other than the distributor?

And this pick up coil would fit my distributor?

Wouldn't like to say 100% but looks like it should! the length of the wire varies on these so you need to be sure that it will reach
