Trying to find the correct alternator.

I started the coupe after a couple of months without use and the magic smoke escaped from the alternator. There is now 0V across the battery, warning light continuous and voltmeter doesn't get off the stop.

The dead one is a battered Magnetti Marelli 55A type.

I would like to replace it with a 65 A type but the only ones that are immediately available are also 55A types. I do recognise that Mark is selling race type alternators but they seem a bit steep at £205 and £210. Maybe if I can't find find an alternative.

Can anyone recommend a supplier? Or do I just have to keep looking?

This looks on the face of it as if it may be the answer. An alternator for a Delta integrale.

Would anybody care to offer an opinion on this? It looks like it has the same pulley size and the mountings look as if they should be similar.

And the final answer is that this is a case of me being too clever for my own good.

When the alternator arrived it was indeed very similar but the bottom mounting had an extra, removable, steel spacer but the show stopper was that the plastic pulley was significantly further from the body of the alternator. The pulley fixings were also different to the original so I couldn't swap them over.

Hopefully I'll be able to return it for a less ambitious alternative.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the 65A alternator and the Bosch part number is 0 120 489 142.

Reason I know? Battery has slightly higher voltage when engine turned off than when running so I suspect I have a charging issue

I have the exact same unit on my 1984 HPE, so this confirms originality at least.

Doug,
Have you considered replacing Just the regulator/brush assembly?
Often the bearings and windings outlast the regulator assembly and it’s cheap and easy enough to replace.

Just a thought.

This is something I've also considered. I found the list of parts that constitute the alternator https://www.woodauto.com/bom/33906/BOSCH-0120489142.  Would you also recommend swapping out the regulator as there soon becomes a break even point over a replacement unit.?

Surprised to read all thse comments.  I just went along to my local autoelectrics dealer,  Edge in Tarporley, Cheshire , ordered one and picked it up next day ! ! !

smithymc, I see that's a 55A. I was hoping to keep with the 65A but interesting reading as the part number gives me some more accurate measurements I can compare on web sites

Just had it reconditioned with new brushes, rectified etc. For £90 so a bit of a bargain. Also means 1 less item I  the diagnosis.
