A shocking engine revelation
« on: March 14, 2017, 04:32:58 PM »
Dear all,

My series1 coupe came to Sri Lanka as a 1600cc used vehicle from Uk. I am about the 5th owner and the vehicle registration also states it's a 1600cc. As I had to hunt for new Pistons (as one has ceased and was burning oil at an alarming rate) imagine my serprise when I was told the diameter of the piston was 76mm, and it must be an early 1290cc! It seems it's next to impossible to locate.
My question is do any one of you kind souls have a serviceable engine in 1300 or1600cc for sale help.

Best regards

Would it make sense to have custom Pistons made?

If going for a replacement engine, maybe a S2 1585 may be a good bet as there were many more made. Depends how original you want to keep it.

Hi Peter,

I spoke to Mr GC and a custom rebuild of Pistons is out as cost is very high. I would prefer an S2 1600.
I just hope it would fit gear box and engine mounts. If anyone out there has one to sell I would be glad to hear.

Please help I am desperate.

Regards

Sulo.

Lots of betas were assembled/sold and still alive in Thailand and south Africa perhaps given your location good places to enquire?

Hi Peter,

Sure looks like the real deal. I will check with my repairer.

Many thanks for this.

The only positive of all this is I have been running the car against much more powerful machines and winning 😂.

One such example is running up against an Alfa 1600GT junior which had a fast road cam and beating it by .01second at the Mahagastota hill climb.

Something to be proud of I guess?
