2L engine with 1.6 gearbox
« on: April 23, 2017, 02:11:39 PM »
Hi, i was thinking to make my car faster on the country roads and in acceleration. Therefore I was thinking to put a 2 L engine with a 1.6 gearbox. Will this make the car faster up to approx 80km per hour. I don't mind that the top speed will go down as long as I can drive 110 KM on the highway. What do you guys think?

Hi,
it certainly will gain acceleration, but you will need to change gears quickly as well ;)

Have a look at my xls calculations that I did some time ago. Obviously the speeds indicated in the spreadsheet are only theoretical, and on 5th gear, but will give you the comparison between different gearboxes.

Hi

From previous threads on here and Lancisti, it is mainly the differential which varies, not the gearbox ratios. Happy to be told I am wrong, but seem to remember that this was the case.

Lukas, not sure if that is what your chart shows?

You are right Peter, but as the diff unit is rather an integral part of a transmission so I take it as a black box :)

the chart shows both the diff ratios and total at top (5th) gear.

Thank you for your replies.
Apparently it's undiscovered terrain, so not sure how I will proceed. Maybe I will use the standard 2L gearbox, to be on the save side.

cheers, Robert

I think sticking with the 2l gearbox is best for one simple reason. The 2l engine has torque and will pull the wider ratios with ease.
In each gear you will go further faster because of the torque. Only if you run a tuned peakey (relatively speaking) 2l engine would lowering the final drive be of much use.
I think this is why later cars that produced more torque (i.e. & vx) had higher final drive again.

Hello, in the Rally Gr3 Beta,

the Gearbox from the Sedan 1400 was the first update....

This is the same GB from the Coupe 1300.

I have one on mine......for sure.... this is short......and on the town as the 2l give more torque this is acceptable..

For TSD rallye this is a good option to rapidly get more speed......
