Hi Chris,
I’ve had the same problem on my dark blue Berlina which is 2k clear coat over the blue base. Unbeknown to me the car cover got damaged by cat claws and foxes. The pin holes allowed water through and it sat and percolated for weeks whilst I was away on holiday.
But it was recoverable. First option is with a lot of patience with a hair dryer getting the paint fairly warm but not scorcio hot that it blisters. Second option is to leave it outside on scorching hot sunny days which we’ve been blessed with this year. My Berlina made a full recovery and you can’t tell it was ever a thing.
I did try putting bags of dessicant drying crystals on the affected areas but that was a complete non event.

I think you will be ok.
Good luck
Ian

I had a similar problem with mine when I first got it, Chris- it would dry a lighter colour where it has been wet.  The solution turned out to be to clay bar it( I had never heard of a clay bar!)- mine having been stored for years, the clay bar removed loads of contamination on a 'cleaned' car and it now dries fine.

Mark

I'd heard of a clay bar, but didn't really know what it. In hindsight, I wish I'd posed the problem here first.  Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Ian.  Well I didn't try the hairdryer, but it did have a few days in the sun but to no avail. It has recovered after the renovator, but I'm not sure how resilient the 2k is now.  We'll see!

I so often hear people talk of losing storage and having to sell... and I have just lost some of mine (for the trailer and Moggie)!
But I needn't have worried. Determined to find a solution I took a few garage measurements, carefully measured the cars, and had a good tidy up.
It turns out that three cars and a trailer can fit in a double garage...  And with 50mm to spare in front of the Moggie!

🤣 Hahaha… Thanks. And that’s exactly what one of my sons wanted to do! But no, this one is very standard.

There are some incredible Moggies with TCs out there. Guy Croft spoke regularly of a customer who had built at least three to take the Lampredi!  Probably ended up more of a Fiat 124 with a Minor shell but must have been a fun drive!

Cracking day at Goodwood for the 2025 LMC track day. For Charlie and I, it was a 600 mile round trip from Yorkshire with a single night stop in Surrey before the event. The Beta was fabulous, and achieved another 140 miles on the Goodwood circuit without missing a beat.
Nice to spend some time with my friend Paddy in his nicely prepared Series 1 Fulvia, and to take Neil on a few 'pax' laps.
Other Betaboyz, including Nigel and Alex, were present and were great company in the paddock, but it would be good to have a few more Betas on the track. I know Alex is keen. Perhaps next year?

Just received a few more magnificent photos of the Coupe from the LMC Goodwood '25 Trackday. Images are from this year's photographer, Richard Betts, with thanks also to Tony for coordinating the shoot.

STEERING RACK

On my way to this year’s Beatmeeta and on some bumpy roads, the Coupe developed some nasty knocking noises from the front end, and some reasonably severe vibration through the steering wheel. After stopping for a look, I found vertical movement from within the steering rack coincidental with a knock of metal on metal. I’ve been here before, but it was over 20 years ago, and what had failed was the plastic supporting bush that supports the main steering arm from within its tube.

It was safe to drive so I continued Betameeta as planned while ordering a replacement bush (£10) from Mark at the shop, and yesterday I started the task to sort it all out.

With the big rubber track rod boots removed, it’s relatively easy to access the four bolts that secure the rack to bulkhead via two clamps and with track-rod ends and steering column coupling disconnected, the rack is best removed through a wheel arch.  LHS worked for me, and I found that with some twisting it just about cleared my exhaust manifold and was extracted with a tilt downwards.

On the bench, I removed the rubber end caps, damper and track arms before sliding off the main concertina boot. As expected, I found pieces of the crumbled bush inside the tube, but I noted the inside of my rack to be virtually dry.  It didn’t appear worn, but the lack of lubrication can’t have helped the life of the previous bush. With new push pressed into place and ensuring that the three outer lugs of the bush were seated in their corresponding holes in the tube, reassembly was straightforward; I also chose to take Mr Haynes’ advice and added a good splosh of gear oil.

Refitting the rack was tricky.  At first, I struggled to get it past the manifold; then once in place, I spent ages trying to align the splines on the rack to the UJ on the steering column, whilst attempting to secure the rack to the bulkhead.  My knuckles were bleeding, forearms cut and bruised, and I’d dug out some choice vocabulary I’d not used in years.  I went to the pub instead!

This morning, with the simple addition of my pub mate working inside the footwell to help mating the splines, and with me pushing the rack up and back to get a bolt in the clamp, and it was in.  Mr Haynes was right on this... it is a two man job.

The rest of the reassembly was without incident, but there is some oil leaking from the rack. This is obviously what they do for a while until reaching a happy level, but I wish I’d used some grease instead. I remember a small packet of grease that used to come with Landrover swivel joints… I can’t help thinking that would’ve been a cleaner lubricant for this rack?

Grateful for any thoughts?

Chris,
I haven't owned a manual rack car for a long time but I recall that
after replacing the big gaiter I'd raise the left hand side as high as possible
and fill with gear oil (200cc) through the end cap.
It shouldn't leak at any time.
The track rod centre fixings have the internal big, shaped washers
that are difficult to manage, it's the rubber gaiter that provides the sealing here.

Hi Nigel, The gaiter is in good condition and was correctly seated against the big washers... and to be fair, it's not leaked a lot. The small amount on the garage floor this morning could in fact be excess/overspill after the manoeuvres during installation. That said, if I was doing this again, I'd recommend using the Landrover 'One Shot' grease instead; it's a much better product for an old manual rack.

I got to see your car in the flesh over the weekend.  Its a credit to you.  Lovely

Question, what is the Momo steering wheel exact model you have?  I might get one for Christmas, if I am good

Hi Mark, Thank you for your kind words. The whole stand looked excellent with the other fabulous cars from Alex, Dan and Justin - sorry I didn't get to meet you when you visited.

LANCASTER INSURANCE CLASSIC MOTOR SHOW 2025 – NEC BIRMINGHAM

It was an absolute privilege to display my Beta Coupe on the Lancia Beta Forum stand at the NEC this year, and the 2-3 days of required deep cleaning was even strangely therapeutic. The Coupe’s engine was obviously going to be of interest to visitors to our stand, so that needed some particular attention given its 10,000mile coating of grime! Old oils and dirt were all cleared with a decent engine product from Autoglym... the results were great.

Along with Alex, Dan and Justin we each drove our cars to Birmingham last Thursday and after meeting in an NEC car park, we moved inside to set the stand; thereafter, John and Tony decided on the layout which we duly delivered.

Friday marked the start of three very full days each involving some early cleaning, lots of chat throughout the day, then some good grub washed down with plenty of ale in the evening. We had a good team throughout that was further supported by Mark W and Dan, Peter, Guy, Nigel and Rob… most of whom were in for the duration - including the beers!

This was a positive and uplifting experience that would not have happened without such a great team running the Lancia Beta Forum. Well done chaps, and thank you!

Hi Chris, Your car was fantastic to see and I enjoyed catching up with you and Dan for a major chat. Somehow I entirely missed John this year. A shame the overhaul show is declining with too many plastic stools, garden furniture and charity stands.
Still worth it for the conversations and the social event from my perspective. Collectively I think the Lancia stands were some of the best of the whole Event. So strange we got so little space when the organizers were clearly padding out un used space elsewhere in the Hall.

Hi Chris, It was nice to meet you and see your lovely Beta. V envious of your engine!.

Top marks to everyone involved in setting up the stand(s) and putting their cars on display. I might be biased but i felt the range of Lancias put most other manufacturers in the shade. So many cars that led the way with groundbreaking design and engineering.

You should have been the centrepiece of the hall or at the front where the military stuff was.

Like Eric, I was a little bewildered by the furniture and various 'tat' around the place and the huge, mostly empty, military vehicle area in our hall- delighted we lifted the standard.

The car looked great Chris, as they all did.

An integrale wheel also works well and can be picked up for less. I have a strong suspicion that was made by Momo in any case.
