Bangin' Choonze: speaker recommendations

My Beta has, it appears, never had a radio or other music player.  I have just bought it a reconditioned 1970s Blaupunkt radio with an mp3 connector.  eBay has pairs of door speakers by well known names, but they a seem a bit too cheap at around twenty quid a pair.  What speakers do people have in their Beta doors?   Thanks!

The seller of the radio has added an mp3 connection to a refurbished 1970s radio.

Hi Gerard,
I recently found my speaker were not working, and got these:

They work great with my period Pioneer radio/cassette unit.

They fit ok in the proper position, not in the doors but in the space above
the footwell pockets. Wiring is all there on both sides, and you'll find, if you haven't already,
the radio plug behind the radio slot. Also there is a 2 way connector for an electric aerial,
wiring also in the boot, left-hand side.

These speakers are very slightly too big, so I made a couple of 6mm spacers to let them stand off the bodywork.

At the risk of making a fool of myself again I think in Gerard's car the radio doesn't fit in a slot but under the heater in the centre console and the doors may well have speaker grilles already built into the door cards.

I too like Pioneer speakers, as referred to on e-bay, but the speaker holes built into the doors may be 4 1/2 inches nor 5 3/4.

My car has that interior and has speaker grilles in the doors.  The plan is to leave the ashtray where it is and hang the radio underneath the central vents.    The Blaupunkt has a faux-wood surround, but I have decided to use that radio in my Leyland Princess instead (that car has a heavily wooded interior and a narrow radio aperture.  Its not very good and possibly OE radio has failed).  The Beta is getting a new in box late 1970s/early 1980s Radiomobile radio-cassette player.   I am not sure what to do re an aerial.   My HF has a horrid modern stereo but is getting a 70s black Blaupunkt instead.   My Appia has its original 1962 Blaupunkt but it's not working.  

I may get some 4 inch Pioneer speakers from eBay for the Beta.

I remember letting a radio into the dash where the ashtray is and my advice is don't consider that as an option! Where you're planning is the best spot if you have to fit one! Aerial - I'd be tempted to fit a screen mount DAB/AM/FM type and see how it goes, especially if you get a converted classic radio with DAB functionality. If the car doesn't have an aerial fitted at the moment it would be a shame to drill a hole in it for one now!

I have decided that instead of the Radiomobile, the Beta can have the other MP3-adapted radio that I bought from the same helpful eBay vendor.  It's a Phillips Techno, not as I had thought another Blaupunkt.  It came with a neat cradle that will fit below the vents.  For the present, the HF can keep its modern stereo, which does at least allow me to play the CDs that I  bought when out GT-ing in it at the weekend.

In the event, the Blaupunkt has now gone into the Beta.  I am awaiting delivery of a couple of Pioneer speakers for the doors.  

Very early this morning I drove the Beta from Oxfordshire to London in the rain, but I had to do my own singing.

Apologies for the late response to this thread but you may be interested in my solution to the same problem. My 1600 has also never had a radio fitted and although not as criminal as ridiculous wheels on a MKI Golf, I do still want to keep it original.

If I pull out the ashtray my iPhone 10 is the perfect size to wedge in sideways. A Bose Soundlink Mini is the perfect size to sit in the little carpeted cubby hole behind the gearstick. Hey presto, modern bangin choonze and Sat Nav as a bonus!

Very neat solution except for the iPhone flapping about covering heater controls? Can you get a spare cover and drill it/glue a magnetic mount?

If I push the ashtray back in it locks the phone solid, so even during a “slightly more spirited drive” the phone stays put. But yes it does cover the heater controls.
I use a magnetic mount in the T6 (daily drive) and it works a treat so yes, that is certainly a possibility.

I attached a Brodit mount to the Ashtray which clears the heater controls and will stop the phone wandering off during cornering. I have the S2 FL Dash so my Alpine unit is set far back and hidden by the blanking plate when not in use.
It is connected to a 4x 50watt amp behind the spare wheel and 4 proper speakers in the right RMS range.
