Is there a UK-based supplier of shims for our engines?
One that has any size I may need.

Pallet shims are the same as a twin cam.

Hi

Just resurrecting this thread. On the sites who offer these shims, which are widely used on Lancia and Fiats, the ones I have seen only offer increments of .05 mm eg 4.0 4.05 4.1 etc. The shims I have from various engines have various in between sizes eg 4.27. Is this a factory thing or are other sizes available?

I realise a machine shop can mod a shim to suit, but if possible to buy off the shelf would be useful to know.

The increments in 0.05 is normal. Take care to use shims of known size in the process of measuring and do not go below 3.50mm or you risk scuffing the cams on the buckets. Typically having several new 4.00 shims to fit for testing works well.
This saves time wasted trusting what it says on the back of worn shims. Always measure used shims with a good quality digital Vernier or micrometer. Use high Quality metric feeler gauges not some rusty mangled item bought from you local market stall/boot fair.

Your 4.27 is probably 4.25 when measured.

The feeler gauges are from well before boot sales and I bought a decent albeit used micrometer set, both imperial, so pretty happy with the quality. I am measuring each shim and not just going on the markings.

My query for above was that .05mm is approx 2 thou where the tolerance is set to 3 thou, so you have to be pretty accurate with knowing what you need to keep it in spec and difficult to get exactly even gaps across all cylinders.
