Vx stalling, fuel tank issue
« on: August 17, 2025, 10:04:51 AM »
Hi everyone, a new poster here. Trying to bring a 1984 Coupe Vx to life  (only one in Sweden I think) which has been sitting for several years. A lot of engine work done thanks to parts from Betaboyz. Flushed the tank, changed the fuel pump, changed the fuel lines. Car runs great until it suddenly stalls and dies. No clear pattern; can run for an hour or more and then suddenly stall. After a while it will start up like nothing happened, especially if the fuel tank is near full. Seems to happen more the emptier the tank is. We seem to think there might be a problem inside the tank, with the fuel pickup and the filter in there which I read people here have called “unservicable”. At this point I would happily swap the tank if it is possible to find one. Are there replacement fuel tanks available? Or anyone who could advise how to remedy this problem? Any help much appreciated.

Hi, and welcome.

The 'unserviceable' mesh screen is located at the bottom of the pick-up tube,
under the fuel sender. It is most likely the cause of your issues due to what you've done already.
It can be punctured by using an old long screwdriver, (or something similar,)
bent to 90 degrees an inch from the blade end. Here, a borescope camera would be useful so that
you can see, initially, what you're aiming for.
Once you position the tool, use a hammer to drive sideways through the mesh, at as many locations
as you can.
Borescope again to check your work.

Once you're satisfied you've got a few holes, close up the fuel sender.

It's now essential to fit an additional filter between the tank and the pump, to protect the pump
from future debris.

Hope this helps,

Nigel

I’ve got a brand new sender unit for a VX or IE in the original Lancia box if you wanted to swap it out? It’s replacement (for a carb car) cost me over £100 but you can have it for £50 plus post,

You can send me a message through this forum or direct to guymayers@mail.com. If you include a WhatsApp number I'll send you pictures of the sender so you know it's correct? Please send me your address so I can get a postage price too!

Cheers

One thing to check is the rather complicated VX fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch line, If oil pressure signal from switch (maybe partially working) goes then the pump stops working....
