Delta HF Turbo wheels on a HPE
« on: September 10, 2025, 10:47:23 AM »
Hello dear friends. This might be an unofficial record of sorts for picking up an old thread but here goes:
Recently our VX HPE (Lulu) was recommissioned and is being enjoyed once more. I had acquired a set of Lancia Delta HF Turbo wheels a while back, and have seen a few members use them on their Betas because they look great if renovated in grey anthracite etc.
I weighed them on my famous post office scales.
They are HEAVY. (7.300kg) Compared to my “featherweight” Cromodora 8 spoke original fit wheels @ 5.400kg each!

They are the same size. (5 1/2 x 14”) Same bolt pattern and PCD (obviously).
So why the huge extra weight penalty?

Were they designed to cope with with extra horsepower / torque in mind. These are stamped 1988 and not the style fitted on the Later 4WD cars?

As a cosmetic exercise and if tyre size remains the same (185 / 60 14”j as on the my VX, the only difference will be offset that is 45mm as opposed to 34mm on the original set up. I assume 10 mm spacers will be required to sit them in the same position on the suspension?

Am I going to feel a negative impact on handling?
Advise please.

It is more common to use the 7x15 wheels of the same design because they are a better platform for 15 inch lower profile 195 x 55 Tyres. This design of wheels are heavy which is why Integrale owners find lighter alternatives. Monte Owners favor Ronal A1 wheels because they look a bit like the 037 wheels and provide a solution for larger brakes and lower profile tyres. Heavier wheels mean slower suspension response although you would probably not notice. On the plus side they are very strong and tend not to buckle like Beta wheels when face with our many potholes.

Thanks Eric. Not really concerned with upping the wheel/ tire size as I don’t want to upset the sweet handling of the standard spec.

I do suspect that with a dish which is 11 mm more inboard than the standard wheel I will need 10mm spacers?
You mentioned alloy spacers a while ago. Where might I find a set please?
You make a good point regarding the roads these days though.
Perhaps the weight penalty is not something to worry about?

If anyone has a spare 15inch wheel spare I still need to find one to match the set on my car! I think the slightly lower profile looks just fine on a Beta and I hope to see how it handles one day next year! As to the weight of the larger one - no idea! I didn't bother to weigh it before the tyres were fitted!

Look up Fiat 500 Wheel Spacers online. They are the same 4x98 PCD. Go for alloy ones that secure with 2 bolts to the hub and have a wheel centering spigot to ensure vibration free running. You will need longer bolts as well. These must be 10,9 grade and have 1.5x bolt diameter of thread depth in the hub when fitted. You can experiment with 1 tyre fitted 2 long bolts and washer stacks to work out the spacer size you need. A man with a lathe can adapt thicker items.
