Pinking under load
« on: November 18, 2025, 02:53:30 PM »
Afternoon all.

My car starts brilliantly and when static and warm sounds great at all rev's.  When driving very smoothly it performs well, but when you give it some beans it 'pinks' a lot until the revs come up naturally and I guess there is a hesitancy.

I found lots of messages referring to this thread but its dead:

http://www.betaboyz.myzen.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=649.0

What would the consensus be as a list to work through?

I have replaced all the HT leads, plugs, filters, dizzy cap and rotor arm.  Timing looks fine, at tickover and at 3200/28d.  What next and which order do you think?

I have not touched the mixture or anything, is that the next thing to do, maybe followed by a carb and dizzy strip and clean?

If the pinking is as a result of timing issues then it's possible the bob weights inside the distributor are seized? A clean and a little grease might sort that out?

In addition to bob weights seized if your dizzy has a vacuum advance this might have a broken diaphragm or missing connection stopping it from adjusting the timing under load. Have a look at Chris Mace's thread for info on 123 Ignition distributors that allow great control of the timing if your current unit is in rough condition this could be a good option.

Mark,

I would try retarding the timing by one degree at a time to see if
that helps.
Also try increasing fuel mixture by quarter turn increments outwards.

But before the above:
Your car came with GP registration plates which indicates operating at 5000ft above
sea level. In that case the carb jets may well be set up for a leaner mixture necessary
at that altitude. I suggest re-jetting to factory spec if you find discrepancies.

This is due to the forum domain/server change earlier in the year - just take the topic number and place it in link to the current forum, i,e.:

What the forum needs is someone to run through the database and replace old with new  ;)

I was also thinking this Nigel.  I am going to head this direction a check the jets.  I will go for your fuel mixture and retarding the ign. first and then dizzy and carb next.  TVM again :-)

That is a very good point..... looks like another winter job for me to do........ the old Zen account has now been cancelled, so the link should not even exist, hence dead end.

Looks like only 276 references to change!

Yep sure am.  I have just filled up from almost empty to mostly full with tank safe and an additive to try, both Millers products.

Nigel, I did this and its much better, turn in a half in the end,  mid range is not great.  Time to pull the carb clean and check the jets.  Alan sent over a list of std jets etc to check.  I will do the valve clearances next.  I tested the fuel pressure 4psi

This carb seems like it its in good shape so I am sending the top of to Classic Carbs for a repair.  Rebuild kit, float and pin, some cleaner, brushes and clean rags, plus the repair £340, not cheap is it.  I am hoping with the correct jets the carb can be tuned further to run well.
