S4 VX headlamp relays
« on: October 18, 2026, 03:17:25 PM »
Am I missing something but it seems that my 84 VX coupe (and all such models) does not have the dipped headlamps controlled by relays??

It seems non-VX S4 has a relay for dipped but not on my car build

I have 9v at the bulb when on (quite dim...) whereas I have 12v at the relay controlled main beams....

I suppose the voltage drop is a combination of light control stalk and the many connections till it gets to the bulb (yes I have redone the earths)..

I thought they all ran directly through the column stalk? This is why the column stalk fails eventually, relays are essential

Tim,

I've looked at my 1982 wiring charts, and it's showing relays for
main beams but not for dipped.

I installed 4 relays near the 4 lamps, and powered them from,
indirectly, the black/white permanent positive lines from each side of
the fuse/relay box.

(At the time, I hadn't realised the mains already had a relay, no matter.)
