Beta Alternator

Will fitting a higher amperage alternator than the standard 55A have any adverse effect on a 1600 beta, reason being I've got somewhat of a HEAVY sound system and other electrical gizmos which I think causes dimming lights, especially at idling speed.

When fitting stereos & amps you should calculate the amps the system will draw, if it draws too much then you'll suffer dimming and charging issues.  Fitting an updated alternator will resolve this.

Remember that the Beta electrical system was not designed with big ICE systems in mind.

from what I remember , and I'm very old and very drunk, Vauxhall Astras use the same
alternator and they do a 70 amp and a 100 amp unit.

also there is a company that can modify/upgrade your alternator
