I was thinking of sending my radiator off next month whilst on family holiday for a check and referb, any thoughts and experience on cost v one of these? Everything like this I look at costs >£500

Very late final series Betas actually had aluminium rads but with plastic ends.

I think the main issue with the plastic ends is that to recore requires specialist equipment to re attach. If they are not recoring then not sure what they will be doing to refurbish?

True, for most folk really for road use I think recore of original old style is adequate. I have a nos alloy one in mine much prefer the revised hose layout
I completely forgot to point out that S2FL2 cars have a different radiator layout to earlier cars, I'm guessing that those alloy rads only fit up to 1979

I had actually bought this radiator earlier this month.

And today I replaced the radiator.
All went well with the replacement.
The position of the drain plug is slightly different from the original, but that is not a problem.
The original electric fan was perfectly positioned.
The hoses were fitted perfectly.
With the radiator replacement work completed, I finally attempted to install the engine torque rod.
At this point, however, I discovered a serious problem.
The torque rod could not be fitted. :'(
The original radiator has a recessed area where it interferes with the torque rod.
However, the radiator I bought does not have that recess.
I cannot modify the radiator now.
Would it be quicker to modify the torque rods?
I should have realised about the rods before I bought the radiator.
Can anyone give me some advice on this?

I would speak to the suppliers, let them know there is an issue and ask them to rectify it, supplying a new radiator if they can't modify the original one. They advertise it as a direct replacement but obviously it's not quite right. They need to know before they sell too many of them.

In the parts book it clearly shows the indentation on the radiator. Whilst this is not infallible the pictures are usually fairly reliable. This is the same across the first three series, at least in the parts book, the forth series is a completely different radiator layout. The only differences I can see are that the narrow pipe to the expansion tank seems to have been relocated on later cars than first series.

They should be making these with the dent as per the original. By warming the aluminum it should be fairly simple to create the dent with the right size round bar, but having skill and experience of this kind of work is advisable. Other wise you can alter the stay rod mountings or add a curved section to the rod.

I think it is easiest and cheapest to modify the rods too.

That's a terrible response from someone that states on their website 'Direct fit no alterations necessary.' I don't doubt that designs changed during production and the angle of that bar on 1.6 & 2.0 will be different but that's not an excuse. I would be sending them that picture from the parts book.

The problem with Betas, and probably many other cars, is that there are often subtle differences that aren't obvious. Just because something that looks this same fits one version doesn't mean it'll fit another. I've learnt by experience but still make mistakes!

At some point in the future, when the engine is installed I'll be trial fitting the original radiator before spending cash on a recore (if necessary) but this was the fallback option for me. I've checked my radiator and it doesn't have the scalloped indentation. I can't comment on fitment with the steady bar yet as the car arrived with the cylinder head in the boot... My car is a 1981 2.0 if that helps? I know there's a difference in exhausts so are the cylinder heads taller on the 2 litre cars meaning the clearance is greater and removing the need for this scallop?

I believe it's the block that's taller but of course that makes the whole engine above the block taller and hence the different bonnet. I have a vague recollection that I've seen a steady rod with a curve at one end but could be imagining it, beta variations can make your brain go crazy!

The difference in height was the block, the heads are all very similar (see GCs book if you have one available to view).
On the later cars (ones with the later grill and bonnet hinges?) the radiator fitment was different, not sure if your car has this style rad or if the clearance of the steady bar is any more?

Of course it was the taller block Peter!! My brain is fading today.... My car has the earlier radiator and mounts but the fitment of the Guy Croft motor with it's twin 40's may preclude fitment of that when the air filter is on. A bridge I will cross in due course.

That is the downside to the side draughts, getting cool air to them is a challenge, hence why I guess the G4 Beta had curved trumpets for its carbs.

I have a plan Peter. But I don't know what it is until the engine is installed and the radiator nailed in place..... It'll probably involve some ducting and shielding somehow...

The 82365758 is slightly longer than the 82292354.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on getting cold air into the carbs on a UK car. Carburettor icing is way more of an issue here and is completely avoided by accepting warmer air for a marginal performance penalty.

82292354 (about 470mm) for S1,S2
82365758 (about 500mm) for S3 (828 BC.1 FL)
For a saloon(Berlina) is 82291529 (400mm).
