Clutch Options

I've been doing a little research into clutch options for the standard 215mm clutch fitted to all Betas other than VX models

This probably isn't news to most but it might be of interest to newer members

As might be expected Fiat group used common parts where they could so there is some interchangeability. The following cars use a 215mm clutch that will fit the Beta (nb release bearings differ so you'll need a beta one but they're easy to get hold of):


Alfa 155 2.0 TS 8V
Fiat 131 2.0 (most T/C 131s too I understand)
Fiat Strada 125/130TC (presume 105tc too)
Lancia HF Turbo 1.6 (140lb ft as standard so a OE HF Turbo clutch might be an option too)

The chances are there are more - I'll add them as I find them

For reference the Helix cover and plate are 60-2182 & 70-1948  and the spline is 22.5x20T and is good for 179lb/ft with the organic plate

I don't s'pose you could advise on suitable clutches for VX's as well could you?
I am going to need one when I put the decent engine back in.

I went through the process of identifying vx compatible clutches a while ago, if I still have the notes somewhere I'll post it here however as the car has never ben reassembled I can't 100% guarantee that the parts will fit! With a bit of fishing around the right parts can be found quite cheap on ebay. For some reason the VX used the smaller 1600 release bearing possibly simply rationalisation of parts(?)

An 8V Integrale Clutch will do very nicely for your VX using the Beta Release bearing. It is the correct 225mm diameter push type. NB the 16V Integrale clutch is larger AND a pull type assemble and it will not fit.

As Eric says the 8V Integrale unit will suit well and given that it's 185bhp you could use a standard one not an uprated one.

So far that exact same clutch only seems to be fitted to the Alfa 164 3.0 12V but there must be others. I'll keep looking

What sort of power output would the HF Turbo 1.6 clutch tolerate? I'm planning on giving my Spider a makeover in the near to medium term, with a target of 150-160 bhp and I think an uprated clutch might be a smart idea...

As Eric has noted elsewhere if I remember correctly, any uprated engine should use an uprated clutch, the standard one not being man enough to cope ( non VX ).

I think the question was more that would a standard HF Turbo clutch cope with the output of an uprated Beta engine.

Though the Helix part might be the same for both Beta and HF Turbo the OE spec of the HF Turbo one would almost certainly be higher to cope with the greater torque (141lb/ft vs 129lb/ft)

I had an HFie Turbo midly tweaked to 150bhp and 160lb/ft that was fine on a standard clutch. Since the limiting factor on the clutch is the torque and 160lb/ft is going some for a n/a two litre I'd suggest that an OE HF Turbo clutch would likely be more than adequate.

Cheers Stuart, you translated my garbled enquiry correctly... 

I'm guessing there's a notable price differential between an OE HF Turbo clutch and the Helix version...? As you say, if the OE HF Turbo clutch can cope with 160 lb/ft, then it should handle the more modest demands of a n/a motor with ease.
