I will start with the early cars which, in the UK at least, have two pipes from the air filter housing. One to the rear of the engine near the exhaust manifold and and one to the front of the engine. The lid of the air filter is rotated to select which one to use, normally set to the rear for winter time, front for rest.
The facelift cars have single inlet which splits into two, again one to the rear of the engine and one to the front. The choice of air source is via a temp sensor attached to the air filter housing, ie it is automatic.
