Which oil filter?
« on: August 24, 2022, 01:32:12 PM »
Am looking at Mahle oil filters for my 77 Coupe. Mark has sold out just now. According to the parts site I'm viewing there was a change in 78? Size looks different? Two part numbers: OC 473 or OC 383. Does anyone have an experience or opinion on which way to go? Grateful thanks... Jono

Hi

Just changed my filter and the one which was on was a Mahle OC473. This has the bypass valve. I think it is suitable for all carb 1600 and 2000 engines. Not sure if the IE or VX have differing needs.

Many thanks Peter. Was crawling under the car today in order to read the ref number of my existing filter, all I could see was 'made in Austria.. ' I think, see you Sat?

Hi Jono,

I have used various filters on my car, all bought from local motor factors
except one, a K&N HP2004, which is fitted currently. It was quite expensive compared to
the others, and possibly has a bypass valve.

The bypass valve is really good if you don't change oil regularly, as if the filter
becomes blocked, oil will still flow around the engine. Good in the days when our cars were
new and used daily but not so essential these days with huge improvements in oil
technology, and the use our cars get.

See you Saturday

VX I.e. have lower profile filter due to space restrictions but are same thread, diameter etc.
Can be used on early cars if you want but you’re getting a smaller filter for the same cost.
