Hello everyone, i just bought my first Coupe more than about 30 years after my first car, an FL2 Beta HPE 2000 carburator.
After the HPE, i drove a Trevi Volumex till another car badly damaged the rear right corner.

For me the Lancia Beta is a fantastic driver's car, with amazing handeling specially if equipped with good suspension dampers.
Great 2.0L twincam and even better with the Volumex.

I never forgot these old Lancias even after a nice Thema Turbo 16v SW with 205 bhp and visco"LSD". All the car i had after never gave me suche a real driving pleasure and sense of connection to the front axle.

Was looking regulary on the Betaboyz website, thinking that one day i will buy another Beta, a Coupe this time.

So now i bought this red 1978 2.0L Coupe that was badly stored for 37 years, yes this car was just used for about 10 years !
A lot of work needed and one specially painfull is a little rust around the front and rear windscreens.

That is the reason for this post.

I contacted Ricky Evans Motorsport Ltd who runs heatedwindscreen.com

Here is the answer in short:

"Hello Nicolas.

How many screens would you be interested in? Perhaps we can make you your own group order

We have a tooling and can make them heated or standard and with different tints

Roughly £290 for heated and £190 for standard

Thanks
Dan

My question now IS:

How many of you guys here will be interested for a group buy ?

Please let me know as the price seams to be good.

I hope to find some enthousiast as i am.

Regards,

Niko

if the standard screen with tints is this cheap and assuming it fits the spyder I would definitely be up for one and may buy a second just for spares.  The prices I have seen are way more than that

Yes, usualy way too expensive.
That's why i post here the offer from heatedwindscreen.com

I don't know how to organise this group order, but definitely worth the try.

I would also buy one for spares! I'm not sure heated is necessary but it's good to have the option. Are you aware that there are multiple screen options? Apart from clear glass with a green tint on the top (there may be others) there is a Climaglass with a greenish tint and the Volumex in Bronzo tint. BUT the Volumex screens are a different size and held in place by a rubber seal and insert rather than the earlier bonded screen with stainless trim.

I assume they'd need a sample screen? I have a slightly delaminated one in clear for the earlier cars and a full set of Volumex Coupe Bronzo glass (all eight pieces) with minor delamination to the screen. Happy to help if they need a trial screen.

I am not sure how group buys work but maybe the trader can advise on what they would expect and how they would expect it to work and how delivery would be arranged etc etc

Group Buys - If there is a club bank account then usually members put the cash in there and the club pays the supplier. That's what we did with the Stratos Club when we sorted out the Campagnolo Coffin Spoke wheels. But that was a longer drawn out process of making tooling and each set was £2500 and we needed 30 committed individuals. Which we got and more.

In this case the company is likely to need a deposit of 50% or so from the list of individuals which should cover their tooling costs plus a screen to work with. Balance paid on delivery or collection. The Stratos club also got a batch of heated screens years ago but I wasn't involved in that so I can't remember what the process was...

If the supplier doesn't want the hassle of taking 20 deposits then the club nominates an individual to oversee it that they trust, sends the money to him/her and they deal with the supplier on behalf of everyone.

Whichever route is chosen you'll need to find out and publish the likely lead time and arrangements for collection of the batch. It may be delivery to the poor sod chosen and then we all descend on them for a garage day and collection of the finished screen.

Interesting! I am still interested in a Volumex bronze screen (rubber not glue), but the last time I spoke with Pilkingtons who have made replacement Lancia Beta screens before, they told me they could not do Bronze as they could no longer source the particular laminate. I wonder how Ricky Evans Motorsport tints the screen? If not in the laminate then possibly illegal?

Im also interested.
My VX HPE has bonded in screen.
Green with dark green top tint. Or maybe it was a blue top tint? It’s in the loft.
Don’t need heated.

I have the original undamaged screen which only has slight delamination.
Useful for measuring.

Cheers

+1 for a non heated clear with green strip bonded screen as a spare. I have had two new Pilkington screens and they must be well north of £500 now.

I have just re-read the initial post and Dan was quoted as saying he has the tooling. If nobody on here is aware of that is it possible he has tooling for the Monte Carlo?

Yes, they've been producing Montecarlo / Scorpion screens for a few years now, including blue or green top options in the past.  I've got a blue top screen, fitted back in '22 and it fits fine. It has the original black surrounding band where it's bonded.  I'm not aware of any issues with other people.  I've seen there's been group buys to the US in the past and all have been crated and received ok (y)

Hopefully any screens we order either won't have the black bonding around the perimeter as that looks awful IMHO. Whilst I have a new Pilkington screen for the car I'd like a spare on the shelf and if that helps with the group buy I'm in.

If you need a VX screen I have a full set of glass from a Coupe, slight delamination but I think it's okay for the MOT or spares. You'd be welcome to come and look!

Hi Mark

You can ditch the rubber if you need to and go back to the bonded screen. You will need a black painted stainless surround for the VX however.

Cannot remember if Pilkingtons offered the rubber surround screen as well as the bonded version, maybe worth asking if you do not mind the price....

Hello just got Dan's answer from heatedwindscreens.com to some of my questions.
As writen in the first post "Roughly £290 for heated and £190 for standard" front windscreen.

"Hello

We do not stock them so we would be making these for you, that is why they are not on the website.

A minimum order is 5 of any one type, so 5 heated and / or 5 standard

Or yes we can do tints but again its 5 of any one type, so 5 green or 5 clear or 5 top tint etc etc

If we ship 1 in a box to Belgium its £190 insured and cleared

If we ship 10 in a box to Belgium then its £260 and you pay the clearance on arrival.

Both options you pay the local rate of tax on arrival

We already have the tooling to make these windscreens , it just needs to be utilised with group orders like you are suggesting.

Blue, green, clear, bronze available and then we can add some top tints as well.

Green and clear are just like original, blue and bronze may be slightly lighter than original because float glass doesn’t exist in that colour anywhere in the world now, so we make it that colour by tinting the interlayer

For your questions about the sizing between the bonded and rubber fit, I will need to check some file measurement data and may ask you to provide some measurements from the samples you have there.

Sadly I don’t have a tool for the rear, the only way I could do these for you is if we make them in laminated and you provide me with a sample and your group covers the tooling cost.

When we are happy with the measurements on the front then I need to know how many screens and heated / standard and what tint.

Then we take deposits 50% and the rest on completion.

Next chance to order is April / May and glass ready around 12-16 weeks after.

Thanks
Dan

So guys what do you think ?
Group order is really managable for you in the UK or a ten pieces group order for Europe if some are located there as i am.
Brexit means import tax and VAT hassle for sure here in EURSS. (Ooops no politic here, just real things as Cars and afforable dreams)

Regards,

Nico
