fuse box cover
« on: June 02, 2026, 03:05:48 AM »
I have been experimenting with embossing/embedding text & images and have made up a fuse box cover.

The translucent printer filament used is more like opaque but the test tiles show that improvements can be made through technique and playing with print settings (see the tile in the foreground to see the best achieved so far)

The relay designations seem to vary a lot between markets but the one shown is for my 1982 Austalian delivered carb model.

I need to test the ones I printed in PETG filament to see how they cope with engine bay temperatures, esp considering the fuse box location directly above the exhaust manifold.

Cheers

Steve

Had some time and decided to experiment with print slicer parameters to get better transparency for the fuse box cover.....

Ended up with a print that took 7 hours and got better transparency but not worth the time and effort. I think i can get some more small improvements but the print time jumps up to 11 hours.

For those 3d printer nerds out there...this print was face down on a totally smooth build plate with the icons embedded within the first layer of the cover itself.

Cheers,

Steve

I understand why you feel it takes too long but I think that is a thing of beauty considering good s/hand ones don’t really exist.
Transparency is a bit overrated imo as you need to take the cover off to check a fuse, and most cars have black fuse box covers anyway.
Very nice work.

Hi

Can I be a bit of a devils advocate here and say that I agree with Ian re transparency being of no great advantage and I would reverse the colours, ie black with white legends. That way keeping it looking pristine is sooo much easier!

On the positive side it does look superb.

Just to add...printing it black with white icons would massively reduces the print time.

Also the fixing screw that I faithfully reproduced was almost as difficult as the fuze box cover itself !! .....Its is all good learning
