Gearbox drain plug removal
« on: October 18, 2026, 11:13:04 PM »
So I changed the gearbox oil from the diff last year.  The gearbox drain plug is damaged, any thoughts how to get it out?

The Fulvia trick is to put a jack under the 14mm hex driver and a ring spanner with extension on the hex (preferably 14mm not 10mm)

Power Wire Brush all round the edges then lots of anti seize. Your best deep Hex Key blow torch and IKEA stainless roasting tin to hand. Lots of heat all round the edge after wire brushing out the inside to get the key in as far as possible. Hammer tap it if needed. Trolley jack to keep it located and a breaker bar. Have a nice plated clean replacement ready with PTFE tape on the threads. Your IKEA roasting try will catch the oil nicely sitting on top of a bit of card. Enjoy!

That sounds a plan.  Thank you.  I changed the oil almost 18m ago but was not able to completely drain it, plus the oil came out was horrendous.  Gears feel fab at the moment but it will do no harm.  Would you put in a mag plug in either or both of these?  I think it was Nigel said there should be magnets in the bottom somewhere inside?

Hi Mark,
There is a magnet mounted near the diff drain which is only serviceable
during tear-down.
So yes, fit a new mag drain plug there, does no harm.
I've got one on the sump too.
