Oil sensors and switches
« on: February 23, 2024, 03:42:24 PM »
Afternoon all, just want to double check a few things as my oil temperature gauge is not working

On my dashboard (pic 2) I have :
6. Engine oil low pressure warning light
7. Oil pressure gauge.
11. Oil temperature gauge.

Around the oil filter (pic 1) I have:
2. Oil pressure transmitter (guessing this links to 7. Oil pressure gauge)
6. Oil pressure switch (guessing this links to 6. Engine oil low pressure warning light)
If that's correct, where is the oil temperature sensor?

Haynes (that font of truth) has the following
Oil Pressure Switch...Blue.
Oil Temperature Sender...Yellow/Black.
Oil Pressure Sender...Grey/Red.
Fairly sure I may have some of these wrong way round :(

Hi John,
My Lancia diagram shows Yellow (G) from the Oil temp sender all
the way to the dash. This yellow wire goes through at least 2 connectors en-route.

On the dash connector it appears to be the right-hand plug,
and is in 'number 2' position, from which side I'm not sure.

I thought I was going mad when I saw your obvious answer. I took the image from a bigger picture, and to recover some credibility, it shows the oil temp labelled 6 not 12.... but in top right, it's different..

Hi John

Interesting the main picture only shows two sensors, wonder what engine that is from?

Hi Peter,
My S2 Berlina 2000 only has oil pressure warning light and oil pressure gauge on the dashboard. No oil temp.

I am going to buy a couple gauges for oil temp and pressure.  Initially to confirm the status of the engine, and at some point mount in the stereo slot (I think).  I am going to replace the current senders with new to match the gauges, are all the senders M14x1.5?

Hi Mark,
As far as I recall, the oil senders are a much smaller size, say M8 but
with a fine thread.
The size you quote is more like the water temp stuff on the head.

Probably best to take one out and measure.

...are all the senders M14x1.5?
Think you'll find this is the case :)  All straight threads (not tapered) and typically use an aluminium washer to seal.  The water temperature sensor and switch are M16 tapered fit.

I think Nigel is probably correct on this one Mark. I did send you a set of photos and part of a GC email to me describing the faff he had in fitting these: "they needed several adaptors as you can see... Much fun and games with BSP and Metric threads and machining"

I'm sure you'll find a way, but if you're using Racetech you should probably be prepared to drill and tap a few threads.

Interesting - apologies if I've misunderstood, but I thought it was the fitting size of the three sensor/switch ports in the diagram for 2, 6 & 12 that was in question?  If so, the matching parts are these and pretty sure they're all M14 x 1.5 :

https://353652584127257704.weebly.com/store/p96/Oil_pressure_Sender_Unit.html
https://353652584127257704.weebly.com/store/p94/Oil_Pressure_Warning_Sender_Switch.html
https://353652584127257704.weebly.com/store/p93/Oil_Temp_Sender.html

The parts book codes are 4151997, 4422049 and 82240626 respectively so do tie up.

The size of the fitting on the gauge side does look smaller than the original sensors, hence the adaptor?  I can't see why an adapter was needed for the switch (the one in bottom of pictures) as there was no need to replace that, so why not just use the same/correct part? You can get at least a couple of different pressure values with the same fitting, as the Montecarlo S1 had a lower than normal type to control the electric fuel pump running.
