big end bearing clearances

Hello everyone,

My beta is also plagued by the oil surge problem, i bought a NOS oilsump and fitted the betaboyz baffle kit that was sitting on the shelf for over a year. Will fit it to the engine on friday and saturday, my plan is to replace the big end rodbearings while the sump is of and check the oil pump. Ordered a set of 'STD' bearingshells, to confirm the correct clearance my plan was to use a strip of plastigauge. Have to order is since nobody in my region sells it in a brick and mortar store. checked the Haynes book and search function here for the correct value to order the right size plastigauge but cant find it. Does somebody know the correct clearance?

The engine is a late ex injection 2000.

I forget exactly where I found it, but had 2 thou in my mind, this link suggests a range with 2 thou within it.

Thanks! its for the 1.6 and 1.8 but dont think die 2.0 specs would be a lot different.

Mounted them today, used the plastigauge to 'measure' the clearances. they are on the low end of that spectrum. between 0.040 and 0.050ish, think it wil be alright. The old ones were pretty badly worn, looks like its just in time. Will remove a main bearing cap to check it before mounting the oilpump and sump back on.

Down to the Copper is a real oil starvation issue so do check the oil pump end to end particularly inside the strainer looking for instant gasket clogging. Do not be surprised if it knocks again in 2000 miles. You would normally strip the engine and clean the crank oil oil galleries seeing this.

BTW the OE sump does cause some of this with no real oil control on hard cornering.

I know, i think its the result of the oil pressure drop while cornering, maybe also some because the PO had a oil filter mounted without a drainback valve. Checked the pump and removed the strainer, no gasket material in there or debris. Took the pump apart and checked it, clearances are within the specs Haynes shows in their book. Journals looked OK, took 1 maincap off and it was pretty normal wear, no copper showing and no babbit coming of. I will check the oil pressure with a manual gauge while driving to make sure it is enough. Hope it will all turn out alright. Ideally would be to do a complete overhaul on the engine but that will be in the winter.

Drove the car and tested the pressure, everything is good. Gauge was still showing half... tested the sender, it was bad. Replaced it with a NOS one and for the first time in years it has 3/4 scale pressure. Since then we drove 500 km's and she runs good. Fingers crossed it will stay this way.
