new to Lancia
« on: August 06, 2025, 08:02:11 PM »
Hi everyone  Ive been looking for a classic car for a few years with a limited budget and a criteria that even I failed to understand. So without seeing it in the flesh I put a bid on this last week and won it for what I hope was a reasonable price. It looks to have been laid up for 5 years given the current miles and last MOT. Needs the hood looking at to start with. Anything else will become apparent shortly as I am expecting delivery of it . Tin worm is my main concern along with any parts I may need. Last MOT advised corroded springs and the images suggest some body issues in the rear quarters.  I want to make this useable and not a show car. despite being exempt it will be getting an MOT before it sees the road.  Ive also got to learn about how to gain Road tax exemption but have to wait for V5 first which I have to apply for as seller didn't have it.

The car arrived today and I've had a quick look over it and pleased with the purchase. Here is what I have found that needs addressing
Carpets inside need replacing
Fuel leak around pump
Exhaust blow at joint
Gear linkage very stiff
Binding brake on rear
Rear part of roof needs replacing(I knew this)
Needs a cambelt and engine service
New correct size battery
Spare set of keys

Ive not got under it yet but it seems to be ok where rot is concerned. There is some rust on ends of the sills and the quarter panels at joint with sills both sides which I will have to address at some point
Main thing is to get it water tight and road worthy so I can use it.

Welcome  - pics please!

The Beta is a great choice for a classic. Not too expensive, great fun to drive,  a 1970s style car that drives like something from the 90s and mechanically at least easy to fix if is does go wrong.  Lots of scope for tweaking too if that's your thing.

Sounds like you've got one that can be a good rolling restoration. Fuel leak and cambelt are the only absolute essentials to do before you put some miles on it. You may need a new bush set for the gear linkage  - Mark at Lancia Beta Parts usuall has them. Although it's possible the website is down at the moment.

I'd recommend changing all the fuel hoses and replacing any filters too to make sure they're compatible with modern fuels. Check the earth straps from the battery to chassis and gearbox and clean any/all earth points you can find!

I email photos from my phone to myself and reduce the size this way, save locally and then post.

Welcome.  There is so much information here to learn.  I keep reading different people’s restorations, build a list and order parts in ready to do.  I am quite new this Spring/Early Summer.

I have apple products inc phone and mac it auto saves them on my mac. Other than making the image physically smaller I have no idea how to reduce size and I thought they were already stored in the correct format to share

Hi

Welcome to the forum. Think I saw your post on FB?

Betaboyz is sort of a generic name for both the forum and Mark who supplies the parts. His website is lamciabetaparts.co.uk.

Normal photo format is jpg or jpeg for photos. I assume you are trying to add using the Attachments option at the bottom of the text box?

If you email me a photo I can see what the problem is? Send to lbfadmin@icloud.com

Thanks

HI Peter. Thanks for the info.  Yes I am trying to add them as attachments. First I tried copying them from my mac which gave a weird attachment link which I think might have been the problem. so I tried from my phone and then it said file too book . Yes I've posted on several FB groups so you've probably seen the images. I will email you the pictures   thanks Steve

Hi Peter many thanks for doing this for me.
I shall have to learn how to save the pics smaller somehow

Edit.  So I sent the pics to my self by email only smaller size and then saved them
As you can see that’s work
You learn something new each day
This is the worst rust I’ve found so far. Someone has no doubt done work on the car before I think

Hi

Glad you found a way!

Looks like you have a bit of work to do and sadly it is always worse than it looks.....

Hi Steve

Just read your post re carpet. I have a black Coupe one which you could utilise I think for the Spider?

Hi Peter. I did wonder if the coupe was the same size carpet and it was a question I was going to ask.

If reference to the amount of bodywork I agree and the more i look the more I discover. I feel that this is likely to be a full strip and restore story now rather than in the future. I know the bodywork needs attention sooner rather than later for obvious reasons but the more I look the more it makes me think hell let's do it properly NOW. I have ordered some strong taller axle stands so I can get the car off the ground to a reasonable working height so i can sort the fuel leak and the seized brake then I can do the core plug and then see how the engine performs and take it from there. If I can give it a once over and run it for MOT then I can see what needs doing now and what can wait until I can fund it properly.

If the carpet is suitable what price would you be wanting for it?
