Beta Coupe Vacuum Heater Controls Diagram
« on: October 31, 2026, 06:33:28 AM »
Hi All
I'm trying to repair my heater controls. Forty years of other peoples bodges and neglect have not been kind. The switch block is quite complex and is a mix of electrical and vacuum switches

Is there a diagram of which hose (blue yellow black etc) from the heater control goes to each box flap control ? I've tried trawling through the web and all the manuals I have but there is nothing to see. It must be in a manual somewhere.

I have the dash out as it is cracked (I have a refurbished one) and I could see that much of the vacuum stuff was not connected. I can't tell either if the water valve (on right side lower of heart box) should be vacuum or cable. I think this should be vacuum but has been replaced with a 'cable' one ánd tied open. There is no control to match a cable operation so it must be from the 'MAX' A/C setting that should shut off the hot water (maybe)  :-\

I have some certainty that the black pipe connects to the top right of the heater box which must be the inlet flap under the wipers

There were a lot of broken parts on the heater box and the cable control for the temperature slider.
I've fixed these but need to work out where the vac lines connect. I have a vac pump so I can test it while its in bits
I think the electrical connections will be OK but it would be nice to know for sure.

Thanks
Dave F

Hi Dave,
I've had a look in my Australian Handbook supplement and there's
nothing that would help in there.

When I removed the a/c system I'm sure I took out an inline vacuum hot/cold
valve that was fitted above the exhaust manifold area of heater hoses. I've see similar
on I think a Trevi. I also recall not finding a valve, but just a
spigot attached to the heater core. I've since converted my hpe back to manual control,
but you can't do that with a functioning a/c.

As to what you need, I reckon a parts diagram may show what you need.

I acquired a lot of the parts that Nigel had for the air con system and still have them if they're of any use for spares! The part that was used on my car is the main heater box and evaporator as they're different to the non aircon car.

Thanks for the replies, I'm in Australia so shiping parts is expensive.
In the meantime I've found some Scorpion/MonteCarlo Info which is close enough for me to do a logic check on the pipes and actuators
It seems as if the ' hot/cold blend' flap is controlled by both vacuum actuators and a bowden cable, but there are no actuators on my car and don't seen to have had them
That's OK though, seems a bit of italian overcomplication to have both.

Next bother will be if the vacuum switches leak and don't function. I might be back to a manual system as per Mk1 cars. I have a control panel to do this and the cables from another car so It's just then a matter of a separate electrical aircon switch. As I'm thinking now, it seems like the most effective path forward, Three sliders, same fan switch and an aircon on/off. just got to work out how to actuate the heater tap for best aircon in the hot weather

Cheers for now. I'm encouraged to find that there are still many active enthusiasts (....or other descriptor) for the dwindling number of Lancia Beta

Hi Dave,

I too have had many issues with the vac controls for the A/C resulting from the appauling bodges by previous owners. I invested in a smoke machine for detecting vacuum leaks across all the cars systems and it has paid me back several times. I have found a few split or disconnected vac lines and also a crack in the A/C vacuum reservoir / accumulator which had been glued on by a prev owner.

I never managed to find any diagrams for the A/C controls but with the aid of my my smoke machine, I was able to work everything out and test the integity of everything.....including the actuators.

Where abouts in Australia are you ?

Cheers,

Steve

P.S. My smoke machine also helped me find a vacuum pipe from the carb that a Prev owner had forced a ball bearing well into the pipe to block it off....words cannot describe !!

Dave,
I found this in a parts list,
Not fully clear but may help.

I have more information if needed, this is from a North American tech book but I'm assuming this will be much the same

I think the Gamma and Beta systems are probably similar, so the Gamma manual should be a useful reference.
My Beta is an early model, so it doesn’t have an air system.
